It’s Cool to Fuel: Overnight Oats

Overnight Oats: The Easiest Make-Ahead Breakfast

You’ve heard me say over and over again, stop skipping breakfast. If your mornings feel rushed, overnight oats are one of the simplest ways to make sure you start the day with a balanced, performance breakfast. With just a few pantry staples and about five minutes of prep, you'll have a meal that's ready to grab from the fridge the next morning - zero actual cooking required.

This recipe makes 5 servings but you can scale to however many breakfasts you need.

Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups old-fashioned rolled oats

  • 5 tablespoon chia seeds

  • 2.5 cups milk of choice (dairy, almond, oat, soy, etc.)

  • 5 tablespoon nut butter (peanut, almond, or cashew)

  • 5 teaspoon maple syrup (optional, adjust to taste)

  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Toppings

This is very much a choose your own adventure. Pick your favorite fruit and nut to add on top.

  • Sliced banana

  • Pumpkin seeds

  • An extra drizzle of nut butter

  • Additional cinnamon, if desired

Instructions

  1. Add the oats, chia seeds, cinnamon, milk, nut butter, and maple syrup to a large mixing bowl.

  2. Stir well until the nut butter is incorporated and there are no dry pockets of chia seeds.

  3. Seperate the mixture across 5 airtight containers, I recommend picking containers that have some extra space so you can stir in your toppings of choice easily.

  4. Refrigerate overnight, or for at least 4 hours.

  5. In the morning, give the oats a good stir. If they're thicker than you'd like, add a splash of milk.

  6. Top with sliced banana, pumpkin seeds, and any other favorite toppings before enjoying.

Tips for Success

  • Use old-fashioned rolled oats for the best texture. Quick oats can become mushy, while steel-cut oats stay too firm.

  • Make 4-5 jars at a time for an easy breakfast all week. Overnight oats can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

  • If you're using protein powder, stir it into the milk before combining with the oats to help prevent clumps.

Whether you're fueling a workout, heading to the office, or simply trying to make mornings a little easier, overnight oats are one of those recipes you'll find yourself coming back to again and again. They're nutritious, endlessly customizable, and proof that fueling well doesn't have to be complicated.

Let me know what your favorite way to make overnight oats is!
